What We Are Learning
Reading
- Students are learning about themes, point of view (POV), and comparing and contrasting characters/settings/events using literary books. They will be using various picture books and different leveled texts.
- Please have your students keep up with their reading goals. Note that Reading Logs are due Wednesday, December 21.
- We are starting our next unit on Argument Writing. The topic is: “Should school cafeterias serve or ban chocolate milk?” Students will learn how to gather information to support their opinion and learn the structure for writing powerful persuasive essay.
- All students should have published their Informational Writing. If anyone is not finished, please have them finish at home and turn it in ASAP.
- Diversity Project (which will be introduced this week) will be due Monday, December 12. Students will have two days to begin work on the project in class, and may have other time that they can use. Otherwise, the project is expected to be completed at home. Please refer to the packet that is coming home this week.
- In order to allow more time for students to work on the Diversity Project, vocabulary homework and assessments will be suspended for the weeks of November 28 and December 5.

Reminder
- On November 15, we will hold the first round Spelling Bee in homeroom. The final two students from each homeroom will go on to school-wide spelling bee.
- Career Project planning sheets are DUE Thursday, November 17. This career project is going to be amazing this year! Students will be working with an advisor and a group of students in the same career cluster to create a “job fair” presentation in the spring. They will pick three careers under the cluster from the sheet (they took an interest survey already) and put what the typical salary and education needed for the career. They will meet with advisors the Monday after Thanksgiving to pick a career to research and present. They will present their information via a job fair to other 5th graders to give a variety of choices for other students to think about for their future. Thanks for your support…students may have some questions at home about career choices for themselves. Link: http://www.gcic.peachnet.edu/
