The end of fifth grade is always a whirlwind of activities, both academic and social. It goes by really quickly, so I always encourage students and parents to enjoy these last few weeks of elementary school to the fullest. In Language Arts class, each student is completing a Poetry Project. This is a perfect opportunity for you to share your favorite poem with your child. (Students are always impressed that I can recite “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost, which I had to learn in high school.) I am introducing one type of poem each day, and students have time to work on their poems in class. The completed project is due Wednesday, May 4th. On May 9th, students will have the opportunity to perform one of their poems at our annual Fifth Grade Poetry Café which will be held in the Media Center. We will be asking for a few volunteers to help - those details will come later. In Reading class, each student has chosen, and is reading a book related to World War II and/or the Holocaust. On Literature Circle days, students are required to come to book discussion with a 3-2-1 prepared: A 3 sentence summary, 2 vocabulary words from the book with definition and a sentence using that word, and 1 question to discuss with the group. Each group should finish their book by Friday, May 13th. Then, each student will complete a final in-class project on their book the week of May 16th. We are looking forward to a busy, productive, and enjoyable last five weeks of school!!! |
